Luminous Kingdoms

IT HAPPENS ON THE EDGES

This piece is bold and flirty at the same time.  Gray, black and white create strong graphic elements.  And yet, seductive turquoise and chartreuse drip down and speak of swimming pools and summer time and the living is easy.

HENENI/HERE I AM 1

Who hasn't wondered at the gut-wrenching Bible story in which God asks Abraham to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac.  When God called out to him, Abraham answered God with the word, Heneni or Here I Am. Does surrender get more complete than that? And how could God ask such a thing? Many interpretations, much to think about.

HENENI/HERE I AM 2

Okay, I got kind of obsessed by this concept of Heneni or Here I Am, willing to completely surrender to a Higher Power. I read (twice) the amazing book Here I Am by Jonathan Safran Foer.  (Highly recommend).  He weaves stories from the Bible through this epic contemporary story.  Whether you take these Bible stories literally or not, they surely convey ancient wisdom and ideas to ponder.  This piece is another meditation on the beauty and the terror of Heneni.

EMBOSSED AND EMBELLISHED

This piece features a central piece of found old fashioned embossed wallpaper. I wish I had more but that's the nature of found things, you just get what you're lucky enough to find and use it well.  This piece reflects the joy of paper, paint and texture.  Found pieces of baroque patterns and golden papers sit next to bright turquoise and blue.  Just a celebration of diversity.

WAKING UP

Still feeling the stillness of dreamland and my lovely bed, but at the edges, the day creeps in. Maybe hold onto the serenity for a moment longer.  The world can wait.

HARD AND SOFT

This piece contrasts subtle, lyrical, calligraphic marks with the hard-edged black, red and gold building blocks of the things that must be done.  It's a daily dance - the dreamy and the practical, the roses and the bricks.

THE LIGHT-FILLED CENTER

As the Beatles said, "I read the news today, oh boy..." Yes, everyday can feel like another, "Oh boy."  Maybe it's always been that way.  Every generation seems to have to deal with conflict, suffering and poverty.  When answers don't seem to come, the only way out is in.  Into the inner place of light, peace, and love. It's there always waiting. Not an escape, but a place to find strength, purpose, and hope...again.

LOOKING THROUGH THE CENTER

Did you ever have a moment when you felt the world was spinning and speaking and carrying on around you, but you could just stand back and observe it all -- see the drama but not participate.  Detachment can be lovely, but not always.

PICASSO PEEKING THROUGH

First I fell in love with that periwinkle blue, then the strong white typography.  Lots has been written and spoken about the artist, but sometimes it all just feels like a lot of chatter.  The work itself speaks well enough.

SINGING TO THE WIND

I AM HUMAN

This piece was inspired by a piece of graffiti I saw on a building on Market Street in San Francisco as I was walking down the street.  Someone had written, "we are human. Are you?" I took a photo of that scrawl and printed it and collaged it into this piece.  You can see it on a white striped running vertically down the left side of the piece.  My answer, written as though I too were a graffiti artist writing on that wall is that, yes, I am like you, I am Human.

The City of Tracy purchased this piece in its annual purchase award program in 2012.  It hangs at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts in downtown Tracy, California.

WE ALL ARE HOLY

This piece was made as a further response to the graffiti text in San Francisco that said, "We are human. Are you?"  That question and that appeal for brotherhood in the human race moved me deeply.  It still does.  I wanted to go further than just affirming that yes, I, too, am human and I am your sister.  I wanted to declare that we all are holy.  All children of the Universe. All matter.

The original graffiti text that I took a photograph of and printed out is also embedded in this piece several times. It is no longer on that wall.  But it is here.

ONCE UPON A TIME

This monoprint started out to express something sweet -- an old fashioned bedtime story.  I wrote the words in calligraphy at a medium size and then blew them up about 10 times so they'd make a stronger statement on the omniprint.  Pulling the print, I saw something more scary and sinister beneath those often heard opening words.  Come to think of it, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumplestilskin...more scary than sweet. But that mixture of bitter with the sweet sure does make it interesting.

DR. P.R.

Another case of hand lettering taking on new meaning when blown up.  I used to do hand lettering for wedding invitations and such.  I took a practice sheet and blew up the letters and used it in this montage of various letter forms, both hand written and printed.  I hadn't planned it, but Dr. P.R., a.k.a. The Spin Doctor, seems to dominate our political landscape.
